Chile mining in crisis on postponement of projects, people protests

copperupdetes- Chile, the world’s largest producer of copper and also producer gold, lithium and silver, is now facing a crisis on the mining front as regulatory issues, people protests and uncertainties cause postpone of projects and decline in investments.
Albterto Salas, President of Sonami Mining Association, an influential lobby, said that the postponement of projects could impact a third of the projected investment.

The failure to regulate mining and energy industries could put billions of dollars worth projects at risk of litigation from local people. Nevertheless, Chile is expected to attract $100 bn in mining investments in next 10-15 years.
Chileans are demanding greater share in copper export earnings which is expected to rise to $48 bn this year, according to Sonami Mining Association. Chile, which also produces gold, molybdenum, lithium and silver, is seen amassing total exports of $55 billion in 2013.

Pressure groups have plans to jeopardize hydro power projects in Patagonia, thermoelectric plants across the country and major copper mines high in the Andes
